The island of Marinduque is famous for the Moriones Festival, the Lenten celebration on Holy Week by the
Catholic religion. Men and women dress in costumes that depict the Roman soldiers that led Christ to Calvary. The ritual is a festivity among local folks that show repentance for the sins they committed.
The rite re-enacts the half-blind soldier’s presence during the passion of Christ. The people behind the masks of the Moriones endure the scorching heat of the sun as a form of sacrifice as they walk around town to do their penitence.
The Moriones Festival sparked the influx of local and foreign tourists to the island. Soon other tourist attractions began to catch attention.
